AN OPEN LETTER TO THE NO-SHOWS...

Saturday night was a bittersweet night. It was a gathering for a fallen friend, a fallen artist...a fallen soldier. It was a gathering of Originals (Old School), Middle School and New School. It was the warm embraces of old friends and the handshakes of new friends.
It was a movement to raise funds for the family of Mr. Nazon Simmons, Kool Kep, so that he had a proper burial and slept in peace.
Many people were involved with organizing the event, BIG HEK, SEVERE, WERE and a host of others who will not be forgotten for their generous contributions.
The legends that gathered under that roof on Saturday night made the event a truly historic one

SOME1, TRIXTER, STANE, P LEE, ORKO, TRANE, FLASH, BBOYB, CHUMBLY, FEAR, SIVEL, CURLE, SEVERE, KING HECKLE, SIR T-SEL, FRED, DEAN 4, PILOT, RISKY, KATO, TRUST, ANTI...The list goes on. A few boys were missed but not forgotten like SLANG and the SYMASTER.

For the no-shows...you know who you are...you missed out on the set of the year perhaps of the decade.

And when the breakers came out..the house started rocking. There was nothing like seeing TRIXTER and STANEROCK bustin' the old school moves and breaking like they were still 18 years old. Nothing like seeing RISK up-rocking like a mad-man or the best of all, watching ORKO busting penny's in a f u c k i n g suit and tie....that was the best....

In the end, we watched a video montage of KOOL KEP...it was sad but you could feel the energy in the air...the heavy sadness in the hearts, you could see the tears in the eyes...In the end, it was apparent that KOOL KEP's death made a bigger impact on each and everyone in that loft. He brought people together that had not seen each other in many years. He created new friendships and he posthumously pushed graff art to a new level.

He brought STANE and P LEE together again for a performance that would make COMMON and KANYE cry. Word up. AKBAR rocked the house like a man on a mission. Stay tuned for his next project.

In the end, it was a celebration of the life, art and friendship of Nazon Simmons.

IN THE END.........................

Wow, I wish I could have come... Kep and I used to bomb and do throwies together and just hang out back in the day. I just saw him for the first time in 15 years a few months ago. I feel bad for his 10 children that they won't have their dad in their lives.

We should have another big set like that for all those that are still alive.

I was one of the few that missed his celebration and am still upset at that. I was sick and still am off and on...

Anywho, I wanted to share more of KEP's life with yall if I could - I met KEP for the very first time on this day. I had known of him since 1991 so it's been a long time coming. Regardless, he had stopped by at the wall to check out COPE and TKID, but SKOL and I convinced him to paint with us. He showed mad love so I supplied the paint for him to get down with us and he did. That was the first time I met KEP and the first and only time I had the pleasure of painting with him. After that day we kept in touch as he too was a producer so we had plans to hook up and do both music and walls together. I wish I got the opportunity to do both with the man. A true producer of style and originality in all he did. Again, I've been seeing his work since 1991 and patiently awaited the day to meet and paint with this Chicago Legend! I'm glad I at least got the honor to do that once!

RIP KEP! We'll miss your stylez on these city wallz...

I remember painting a lot with Kep and Bore back in 2000-2003. Kep was a mad cool dude and he is missed horribly. Big loss for the community.
RIP Kep.
